Equations

  • For equation captions: Insert -> Reference -> Caption
  • Hack for putting equation numbers on the right side of the equation
    • Insert a 1x2 table with border zero
    • Write equation in left cell
    • In right cell, make a list, and choose format -> bullets and numbering to choose correct list formatting
    • Put a space after the number to avoid problems referencing the equation

    • Reference Type: Equation or Numbered item

Citations

  • Can create a list as with Equations - just use a different list style in bullets and numbering
  • Otherwise, use citation software such as Endnote to keep references organized and automatically format them correctly.

Inline Equations

Using Insert -> Object -> Microsoft Equation (or competitor products such as MathType) is preferred for large equations separated from the text because of versatility. However, for inline equations that appear within the text, it is preferred to avoid using equation objects, since they are inserted as graphics and may take up more space than the other characters, causing uneven line spacing wherever equations are inserted. Instead, a combination of symbols and fonts can produce most needed equations that are typed inline.

Font Conventions

See notation conventions:

\mathrm{a,B} \mathbf{} Designators are denoted with non-italic, non-bold characteracters (for example, cv may indicate variable cost, while cv suggests cost item v).
\mathit{a,B} \mathbf{} Scalar variables are indiciated with italics.
\mathbf{a,b} Vectors are indicated with lower case boldface.
\mathbf{A,B} Matrices are indicated with upper case boldface.
\mathcal{A,B} Sets are indicated with upper case script.

Superscript and Subscript

  • Subscript: {control =}
  • Superscript: {control shift +}

Overbars and Character Compression

  • Format -> Font -> Character Spacing -> Spacing -> Condensed
  • Adjust amount of condensing to make two characters typed next to one another overlap. Use symbols to create overbars, hats, time derivatives, etc. or make superscript/subscript pairs appear directly above and below one another.
